Family Tree Maker 2024 is finally here, and most users—both old and new—have questions regarding installation, upgrades, system requirements, and TreeVault. We have answered some of the frequently asked questions in this blog to ensure that you have a smooth transition to FTM 2024.

Q1: Is there anything I should do before installing FTM 2024?

A: Yes. If you do use TreeVault, you’re set. But if not, it is strongly advised to make new full backups of your family trees prior to installing a new version. This is an best practice that helps keep your data safe and ready to recover if something does go wrong.

Q3: Can I remove my previous version after installing FTM 2024?

A: Yes. Once you’ve successfully installed FTM 2024, you can safely uninstall your old version. Your tree files will be intact, as uninstalling the older version does not erase your saved files.

A: If you’re upgrading from FTM 2019 or 2017 (Software MacKiev versions), your trees will automatically show up in the Plan workspace when you open FTM 2024. Or you can click “Select Tree” → “Tree Browser” to locate your trees. You can also import a tree or restore from a backup via the File menu.

Q5: How do I set up TreeVault in FTM 2024?

A: If you’ve already worked with TreeVault and FTM 2019, setup is a breeze—just open your Source Tree in FTM 2024, and it will immediately convert and link to your Antenna Tree. If you’re a first-time user of TreeVault, step-by-step instructions are available to guide you through the process.

Q6: How do I learn the new features in FTM 2024?

A: FTM 2024 contains a new electronic Companion Guide found under the Help menu. It marks all the new features and enhancements with a unique symbol. Alternatively, you can go to the official support website and browse by topic or keyword to see tutorials and FAQs.

I have tried over and over again to download and open FTM 2024. I cannot get it to open. I don’t know which app to use to open and download this version. I have FTM 2019 on my laptop and I had no trouble with it. I am extremely frustrated. This .dmg file doesn’t seem to be supported at all.
