Compacting a File in FTM 2019 and FTM 2024

Compacting a File in FTM 2019 and FTM 2024

When you add, edit, or delete records in Family Tree Maker (FTM), your file can become larger and slow down. If you want it to run smoothly, you have the option of using the Compact File feature. The feature makes the file smaller, repairs minor problems, and enhances performance.  The more often you run it, the better it keeps your family tree organized and running smoothly. It also keeps files from corrupting and ensures that your data is safe. Performing this type of regular maintenance can give the life of your genealogy research a long extension and simplify navigation.

Why Compact a File?

Compact your file to:

  • Make FTM run faster
  • Save space by decreasing the size of the file
  • Repair small issues
  • Maintain organization for your data.

How to Compact a File in FTM 2019 and FTM 2024?

Perform the following steps to compact your file:

  • Open Family Tree Maker and open your tree file.
  • Visit the Tools Menu and choose Compact File.
  • If there isn’t an open tree file, a box will pop up. Locate your file, choose it, and click Open.
  • Within the Compact File box, select Perform extended analysis. It assists with locating and repairing errors for improved file health.
  • Click on the Compact button to initiate the process.
  • When finished, a dialog box will indicate how much the file size has been compressed. Click OK to complete.

Should You Do This More Than Once?

It was previously recommended to compact the file until the size no longer decreased. No longer. Doing the tool more than once won’t damage your file but won’t give your file much additional benefit either.

Final Thoughts

Compacting your FTM file on a regular basis keeps it running smoothly and your family tree nicely organized. Compacting your file after making significant changes, such as adding data, combining trees, or removing records, is a good practice. Following these steps keeps Family Tree Maker 2024 or 2019 running efficiently and your family history safe and accessible.
